Brief history of shri guru singh sabha, landour, Mussoorie

The gurudwara sahib, shri guru singh sabha, Musssoorie, was established in a small room below ganesh hotel in landour cantt in the year 1911 by the sikh sangat of this small town, Mussoorie. The gurudwara sahib was shifted to the adjoining property, the present premises in the year 1917. The first founders day, more popularly known as “salana diwan”, was celebrated with great zeal & enthusiasm in September 1918. A nagar kirtan was taken out through the streets of Mussoorie and ever since then this has been a regular feature in the calender of events of this historic gurudwara sahib. The salana diwan is celebrated every year in the last week of September wherein sangat from adjoining areas also comes to Mussoorie to participate in the pretigious function of shri guru singh sabha, Mussoorie. A mela type of atmoshphere is created in the entire town of Mussoorie. In the early years the nagar kirtan, which started from the gurudwara sahib, was received by the maharaja of nabha and / or his representatives at his palace, near savoy hotel. later the nagar kirtan was received by the owners and management of savoy hotel. now, after the establishment of gurudwara sahib trust at gandhi chowk, the nagar kirtan is received by the gurudwara sahib, gandhi chowk. Last September we celebrated the 99th.annual function of shri guru singh sabha, Mussoorie, on the 24th & 25th. September 2016 with great zeal & enthusiasm. This year is very special to us as we shall be celebrating the 100th (centenary year) salana diwan on 22nd.,23rd.,& 24th September 2017.

The gurudwara became historical when Havaldar Moden Singh ji, who was employed in survey of india, Mussoorie, left Mussoorie to join the team that dicovered shri hemkund sahib. Bhai Moden Singh ji was presented a purse of rs.600 by shri guru singh sabha, Mussoorie and was given a very warm send-off from shri gurudwara sahib in a procession upto sister bazar. His participation in the discovery of shri hemkund sahib puts gurudwara sahib, shri guru singh sabha, mussorie on the sikh history. Mussoorie is one of the stop-over destinations for the yatris visiting shri hemkund sahib.

A few years ago in the year 2002, the main building of the gurudwara sahib hall started sinking and as a result a portion of the hall was declared dangerous and put out of use. A new building was raised through kaar sewa and the hall of the gurudwara sahib was brought up on the road level, thus saving the hardship being faced by elderly & handicapped people who could not walk down several steps to offer their daily prayers & could not participate in the gurpurab celebrations.

In the year 2010, the manging committee of shri guru singh sabha took up this present very major & prestigious project & decided to rebuilt the old hall of the gurudwara sahib. The entire building was demolised and re constructed upto the road level, adjoining the present hall. In the year 2013, at the salana diwan on September 26th. The new 1800 sq.feet hall was duly innagurated with the installation of shri guru granth sahib and the arambh of shri akhand sahib. This five storey building shall have two community / langar halls, while two stories shall have yatri rooms and the top floor shall house the main hall of the gurudwara sahib (already innaurated). The total cost of the project is over rs.2 crore, (the cost of work completed so far is about rs.1.25 crore out of which a sum of over rs. One crore has already been spent/paid to the contractors m/s shiwalik constructions. The balance amount has yet to be paid to the contractors. We are grateful to mr.shridhar of shiwalik constructions who has been kind enough to invest this balance amount in the project.

APPEAL

The interiors of the main gurudwara sahib hall, sound system, lighting, carpeting, have been completed while glass partitions and other finishing works have yet to be done. The sachkhand sahib has to be rebuilt and renovated. The completion work of both the halls (langar hall & multi purpose community hall) is still to be done. flooring, tiling, roof ceiling pop, windows, carpentery jobs, fans, electrical fittings, staircase tilling & railings, etc. And many such works require our immidiate attention. Construction of yatri rooms on two floors (work already in progress) are our dream project which shall help the singh sabha to raise revenue to meet out our day to day expenses and become self supporting.
Mussoorie being a small town has a very small sikh population and the earnings of all local residents depend upon tourism only. Inspite of these hardships, the local sangat and all our welwishers across the country have donated funds with open hearts towards this very ambitious project for which the management commiitee shall always remain indebted to all concerened.
The completion of this project now depends upon the generosity of many religious organisations & indiviual donors like your goodself. Through these few lines we seek your humble contributions & favours to complete the project. You contributions in kind and in form of monetary donations shall be highly appriciated. We on our part assure you that every penny contributed by you shall be utilised to the best interest of the gurudwara sahib.
